Measuring one journey
What the distance calculator shows
The distance calculator shows three things: the travel distance for driving, walking or cycling, the travel time, and the route drawn on the map. A public transport journey carries its time and its route instead.
The travel distance follows the actual road network rather than the straight line, so it's the distance you'd actually travel.
Driving distance between two places
Enter a starting location and where you're going. The figures and routes update as you change either end, and swapping the two recalculates — because a route isn't always symmetrical, and the return leg can differ.
The distance and route calculator works between addresses, postcodes, cities or a dropped pin, in 200+ countries and territories.
Driving time between addresses
The drive time between locations comes from the same road model as the distance: using real speed limits, junctions, and turn restrictions.
The journey is broken into legs beneath the total, so you can see where the time goes rather than taking one number.
Travel time by public transport, walking and cycling
Switch the transport mode and the journey recalculates against that network — timetables for public transport, the pedestrian network for walking, cycle-appropriate roads for cycling.
For public transport the legs show each service and interchange, so a two-hour journey is visible as the walk, the train and the connection rather than a single number.
Driving times and distances for many locations at once
This tool measures one distance and route at a time.
Measuring thousands of pairs is a different job: the TravelTime infrastructure takes many origins and many destinations in a single request and returns every combination. It calculates distances, routes, and travel times at scale, so you can move from one journey to a full matrix.
How the calculation works
Distance and time come from road models and transport models from TravelTime, rather than a straight-line distance adjusted upwards.
Choosing a different mode recalculates against that network instead of using the driving distance figure. To see an area rather than a journey, the Travel Time Map shows everywhere reachable in a given time, and the Radius Map Tool draws a straight-line radius circle for comparison.
Frequently asked questions
How is driving distance different from straight-line distance?
Driving distance follows the road network, so it's almost always longer than the straight line. The route on the map is the journey the numbers describe.
Can I calculate travel time by public transport, walking or cycling?
Yes — switch the mode above the map and the journey recalculates against that mode’s real network. Walking and cycling carry a distance as well as a time; a public transport journey carries the time and the route.
Can I calculate many distances at once?
This page measures one pair at a time. The TravelTime API's Distance Matrix endpoint calculates thousands of origin–destination pairs in one request.
